Red Orchestra 2: Heroes Of Stalingrad With Rising Storm For Mac

Forecasting fun. By The worst thing I can say about is that not enough of you are playing it. That is its biggest weakness: a demanding tactical FPS needs lots of players, and Rising Storm has too many servers that are never even half-full. Bots can fill in and catch bullets, but this will be an even better game when - and if - more people realize what a terrific FPS they’re missing out on. Rising Storm is the Pacific Theater expansion to Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad, but it’s really quite a bit more than that. Thanks to the starkly different sides, Rising Storm is a squad-based FPS where each side must employ completely different tactics. It’s been fascinating to see how each side faces different challenges on each map.

The Americans can usually grind through levels using their massive firepower advantage, while the Japanese have to give ground, then stake everything on a sudden, all-hands counterattacks to drive the Americans back. It gives Rising Storm a unique feel compared to most other military shooters, where the differences between gear and factions can be so minimal that they are effectively mirror-matches. Let God sort'em out. The graphics look slightly aged, but the detail and art quality are still superb and actually make for a more interesting, convincing combat environment. It’s all supported by terrific level design and a very wise decision to leave vehicles out. Rising Storm is all about infantry combat across a wide variety control-point maps based on famous Pacific battlefields. There’s the Japanese night attack on Guadalcanal, charging through the jungle and contested trenchworks to drive the Americans off their airfield.

There’s bitter street-fighting in Saipan, as the Americans storm ashore and come right into a ruined warehouse district and railyard, where the front-line quickly becomes invisible. Most majestically, there’s the black volcanic sands and steep cliffs of Iwo Jima, where the Americans have to advance only a few hundred yards but where the Japanese have dug a deadly maze of fortifications and enjoy a commanding view of the entire landing zone. Each map requires its own game plan, and good use of the unique tools Rising Storm grants to each side. Those tools are what make Rising Storm so different from Heroes of Stalingrad.

The Americans are better equipped for infantry combat than anyone else, armed with the semi-automatic M1 rifle, the Browning Automatic Rifle (combining range, fire rate, and accuracy in one deadly package), and the mighty flamethrower. Those are all great weapons, and they feel particularly powerful here, where the Japanese don’t have any great answers to them. The flamethrower is simply incredible, both for what it adds to the battlefield visually (seeing a lance of flame jetting across a trench line is appalling and beautiful), and the way it can clear out entire buildings with a single sustained burst, with fire bouncing off walls and through doorways to spread even more destruction. A single flamethrower in the right place at the right time can tip an entire battle. The knee mortar produces great explosive results. I wish the Japanese were a little more balanced, because they have a very hard time on the attack, but there is only one map I’d say is really problematic.

They are primarily armed with bolt-action rifles and a few submachine guns, meaning they’re usually outgunned. Fortunately, most of the maps have them on the defensive, which compensates for some of the American strengths. But all things being equal, the Americans have an easier time of it. Still, the Japanese have some special counters to the Americans. First and foremost, they have a knee-mortar (basically a grenade launcher) that basically acts as mobile artillery. It takes a lot of practice to aim well with it, but it’s devastating in the right hands, and can blow holes in American positions.

The second thing the Japanese can do is banzai charge. An officer can draw his katana and charge forward, and both he and nearby soldiers become more resistant to fatigue and suppression while nearby enemies become suppressed themselves. I was skeptical that it could really work well, but it’s actually brilliant and an absolute thrill to be a part of. You’re running through a smoke screen listening to a bunch of Japanese screaming their heads off, American return fire is starting to slacken and miss, and suddenly you’re in their faces, chopping with your sword while all around you guys are engaging with bayonets and submachine guns.

When it works, it’s incredible. The trouble is, the bots don’t always do a great job cooperating with these tactics, and even with humans it can be hard to coordinate.

Which brings us to the main drawback of Rising Storm and the entire Red Orchestra series: not enough people play them. I get why this is. It can seem forbiddingly complicated: your weapons won’t hit a damn thing unless the sights are correctly adjusted for range, calling down artillery support is a multi-step process, and on a fully populated server, you’ll probably spend most of your time serving as a grunt rifleman rather than giving orders or serving a machine gun. And, by the way, you’re going to die a lot while you figure things out. Better tutorials, particularly for Rising Storm’s new concepts and weapons, would be nice. But as with games like Dark Souls and Arma 2, the rewards are more satisfying for how challenging Rising Storm is.

Almost every shot is a skill shot. Every time you lie in wait, knowing that someone will eventually come through your position to try and flank a capture point, and then pull off a massive ambush, you know you just helped save your team. Every time you get to an observation point, mark an artillery barrage, then run through a field of gunfire to call down the thunder, you feel like you are living your own private war movie. And it doesn’t take long before most of the unique game mechanics become second nature, and the dispiriting server browser (with hundreds of empty servers) will quickly be replaced by a short-list of favorites that will serve up good games.
